Abstract: This study is devoted to the preparation of powder activated of a coal from the crushed stems of Ferula communis harvested in the hillsides of the Tipaza province in northern Algeria. The plant material was impregnated with phosphoric acid (H3PO4) and then carbonized at 550°C  in a muffle furnace. The results obtained by characterization of the adsorbent material showed a high porosity and a specific surface of 1377 m2/g. Applications of the neutral red dye adsorption on the activated coal, in an aqueous medium, have shown an adsorbate removal capacity of up to 666 mg/g. The thermodynamic study has shown that the adsorption process is spontaneous and endothermic.
