Abstract

Abstract : Zeolite K-LTL was synthesized by hydrothermal crystallization for use as a sorbent for radionuclide. It was characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM and BET surface area. The influence of pH, U (VI) concentration, temperature, sorbent dose and contact time on the sorption behavior of U (VI) were investigated. The sorption behaviors of uranium on both materials (I and II) from aqueous systems have been studied by batch technique and the optimum adsorption conditions were determined for the two zeolites K-LTL. The maximum sorption capacities were found to be 22 and 25 mg/g for uranium by materials I and II respectively. The sorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The Freundlich, Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) models have been applied for the two materials and the data correlate well with Langmuir model and that the sorption is chemical in nature. Thermodynamic data reveal sorption phenomena as endothermic and the values of ΔG° decrease with rise in temperature showing that the sorption is more favorable at high temperature. The desorption of UO22+ from the two materials KLTL by using 0.05M HNO3, was around 20% and 90% for materials I and II respectively for one cycle.
